JFIF describes a structure for storing JPEG image data. JPG is a filename extension; a .jpg file may already use JFIF internally. That is why a valid source can often be copied with a new extension.
JFIF to JPG in preserve mode does not change the file contents, so the byte count stays identical. Use re-encoding only if you need different compression or the receiving app rejects the preserved copy.
Preserve mode retains all source metadata. Browser re-encoding generally removes original metadata and applies the display orientation, but this tool is not a verified metadata scrubber. Check sensitive images before sharing them.
